look what they've done to my song
Melanie's "Look What They've Done to my Song, Ma" was released in 1970. "Ruby
Tuesday" on the record. Both the song and its lyrics are about how with
songs are treated as they are released. And the title of the song ("Look what
they did with my song, ma") describes the relationship between advertising and music industries where works are often exploited for advertising and remade by others musicians. The song, in a general sense, is about the invasions of artists rights where large institutions pressure young artists to give up their principles. The irony lies in the fact that after the release of the song, twelve more professional and popular musicians released different versions of the piece in five languages, as well as redesigned the song and used it in three commercials. I made a music track consisting of all versions of this song that sound like a collective lament, cry for help. And the image is a animated photo of the record's vinyl record that was put under microscope that points to the recording and the song's journey through different media.
